Glossary
Lease – The vehicle is rented over a period of time, and then handed back at the end of the rental period. Maintenance can be included in the cost of the lease.
Loan An amount of money borrowed usually from a bank or building society to pay for a vehicle.
Maintenance – Cars and commercial vehicles need regular maintenance, such as servicing, new exhausts, tyres and batteries, which can prove to be costly. Most lease plans have the option of having the cost of maintenance included in the monthly rental price.
Manual Transmission – Gears are changed by the driver using a gear stick and a clutch pedal. Better fuel economy can be achieved with a manual gearbox as the driver decides when to change gear, rather than the car.
Monthly Payment – The amount paid to the lease company or finance company each month either as a rental or Hire Purchase payment.
MPV – Multi Purpose Vehicles are usually bigger than the family car they are based on. They have a higher driving position to provide additional visibility, and the carrying capacity of an estate car. MPV’s often have clever folding seats, big boots and additional storage facilities and other features to appeal to families. The Citroen Picasso and Renault Scenic are popular MPVs.
Off-Roader – A 4 x 4 vehicle that is designed for off-road use, and traditionally only found in rural areas, but increasingly now used in urban areas. Off-roaders provide a high driving position, and are an alternative to an estate car or an MPV. Popular models include the Toyota RAV4 and the Hyundai Terracan.
